Fusion Inhibitors (FIs)

Unlike many other classes of antiretrovirals, this newer class of antiretrovirals works by interfering with the activity of HIV before it infects the cell. As their name implies, FIs block viral infection by blocking viral binding sites, which prevents HIV from adhering to the cell surface and subsequently infecting CD4 cells. With no available viral binding site, HIV is unable to introduce viral RNA into the CD4 cell.
